Thimphu TechPark, a 100% DHI owned company, as an agency responsible for promoting IT and innovation in the country, invited school students, undergraduates, graduates, and the public in general to participate in the National Essay Contest on the theme “Our common future in a changing world”. The essay contest was organized to pay respects to our beloved king on the occasion of his 41st Birth Anniversary, and the contest was announced on 21st February 2021.

The objective of the essay contest was to raise awareness on His Majesty’s vision for the future of Bhutan based on the number of His addresses in which he has repeatedly emphasized the importance of leveraging the power of technologies as we forge our way into the future, and make people reflect on how we can contribute to towards this vision. 

The world is changing rapidly. We cannot afford to avoid what we don’t yet understand and hope for the best. Such an attitude will cost us our national objective of self-reliance.”

The participants were asked to submit original essays under the following three categories with specific themes:

Students of class 12 and belowDriven by technologies, the world is changing very fast. What kind of future do you foresee for your generation?

The goal of the contest was to harness the energy, creativity, and initiative of our Bhutanese to think about the future and promote the consciousness on technology, digitization, and IT Services. The contest received a total of 318 participants; 173 in the school category, 68 in the college category, and 77 in the General category.

After receiving all the essays, the names of the applicants were erased and each essay was assigned a unique index number to ensure that the jury was unaware of the author to avoid any possible bias. Each entry was evaluated anonymously by using a standard evaluation process and score-sheet.A team of both External and internal evaluators from diverse backgrounds were involved to ensure objectivity and diversity in the evaluation.

Each submission was assessed by the panel members who shortlisted top 10 essays for each category. The top 10 essays were then further reviewed and assessed by another group of judges to ultimately finalize the best three winners in each category ensuring fairness and objectivity.

Top three winners of each category was announced on 7th May, coinciding with the 9th Foundation Day of Thimphu TechPark.

The list below highlights the recipients of the award. The grand prizes for each category is a smart phone worth up to about Nu. 50,000, while the second and third prize winners of each category took home cash prizes. All the prizes were sponsored by the FDI companies (ScanCafe Pvt. Ltd., SELISE Bhutan Pvt. Ltd., TIJ-Tech Pvt. Ltd. and iMerit Technologies) located at Thimphu TechPark and Bhutan Telecom. The top 10 in each category including the prize winners will receive certificates of recognition.
